Vision
Located at the heart of downtown, the renovated Battelle Hall has proven to be a key driver for the growth and continued economic success of the Greater Columbus Convention Center and the adjacent Nationwide Arena district. The successful transformation of the 35-year old arena into a dazzling multi-use banquet and meeting facility marks Columbus as a destination meeting city with flexible accommodations for an expansive range of events.

Site and Program
As the largest multi-use ballroom in the state of Ohio, Battelle Hall functions as a stand-alone public events facility while also connected with the Greater Columbus Convention Center complex. Formerly a rigidly organized, enclosed arena hall with no formal connection to the convention center, the renovation and addition project creates a flexible facility with 74,000 sf of gathering space on 2 levels, subdividable into smaller event spaces through operable walls. An expanded entry lobby adds a strong visual presence toward the Arena district, and connects with the iconic Peter Eisenman-designed north building of the convention center.

Design
Battelle Hall is transformed as Battelle Grand, a signature ballroom experience marked by a new 34’ x 120’ floor-to-ceiling window onto the Columbus skyline, opening up the previously sealed space to natural light and visual interaction with the city. The ceiling design – increasingly an area of opportunity for convention center ballrooms – features a spectacular array of metallic fins with programmable LED lighting, capable of 65,000 color combinations and a different atmospheric effect for every possible use of the space. Working in concert with the larger-than-life window, the ceiling’s vibrant energy lines amplify the drama of the event and broadcast it to the urban precinct, creating a memorable “city room” capable of accommodating a wide range of events from high-end banquets and trade shows to athletic and ballroom dancing competitions.

The success of the Battelle Hall Renovation and Addition has led to a series of projects for the Greater Columbus Convention Center, including the East Lot Master Plan which re-envisions the development potential of the east parking lot as a flexible-use complex oriented toward indoor sporting exhibitions such as volleyball and basketball. On a larger scale, the Interiors Upgrade and Expansion of the 1.7 million-sf convention center, set for completion in 2017, creates essentially a new facility, integrating diverse architectural styles and neighborhood influences into a highly flexible, industry-leading solution.
