Stanford’s White Plaza region has been the center of free speech and social life for decades, but changing patterns and technology has made this place increasingly less adaptable to meet current student, faculty, and community needs. Our work to envision, plan, and design Town Center starts with the people, place, and stories that have shaped this place through time. This process has been informed by a robust engagement process in order to co-create a vision for the place with the community. LMN’s work has been to adapt legacy structures to new needs and uses; create new spaces to gather, participate, and experience Stanford’s robust culture; and reconnect to the place and climate in which the campus is located. The Stanford Town Center will be a new platform to center the social ecosystem, support dialogue and free speech, and bolster intellectual vitality on campus.
