As the 11th largest U.S. city, Austin continues to thrive as a hub of innovation. The new Austin Convention Center aims to break the mold of traditional designs, becoming integrated into the urban fabric via a series of distinct blocks that enhance connectivity. By relocating exhibit halls and loading docks below grade, the project partially restores the city grid and introduces outdoor event spaces that foster street-level interaction.
The vertically-oriented design breaks down the footprint into six segments, activating street life and reestablishing urban thoroughfares. A key feature is the east-west Paseo along 2nd Street, linking downtown to Waller Creek and Waterloo Greenway, reinforcing connections between Austin’s urban and natural environments. Celebrating Austin’s identity as an arts and culture hub, the project offers 620,000 square feet of rentable space, including 70,000 square feet of outdoor event areas, embracing the city’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. A public art program showcases works by ten local artists, weaving Austin’s art scene into the fabric of the project. Aiming to be the most sustainable convention center in the world, the project is targeting ILFI Zero Carbon certification with an all-electric kitchen and HVAC system, positioning it to be the world’s first zero-carbon convention center.
