The Steven S. Wymer Hall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign exemplifies the Gies College of Business’s “Business on Purpose” ethos, positioning the college as a leader in sustainable, globally relevant education. As the first net zero energy academic building delivered through a public-private partnership in the U.S., Wymer Hall sets a new standard for sustainable campus development. The 97,789-square-foot, all-electric building targets LEED Platinum and uses integrated energy strategies, including a geothermal field and off-site solar power, to offset its total energy consumption. Its high-performance envelope, locally sourced materials, and reduced-emission finishes minimize its carbon footprint.

Wymer Hall’s design honors the campus’s neo-Georgian character while introducing contemporary elements. The building prioritizes occupant wellness with daylight-filled interiors, biophilic design, and enhanced air quality. Green roofs, native plantings, and bird-friendly features support ecological health. Flexible classrooms, advanced broadcast studios, and collaborative workspaces empower Gies to advance its teaching mission and foster a resilient, inclusive academic community.
