“When a new academic building opens at UC Berkeley next school year, students will be able to enjoy the polished wood ceiling that looks like it was carved from a tree in a forest, and hopefully feel a connection to the building. But that ceiling of black spruce is actually made of mass timber, a prefabricated wood product that forms most of the building — the first structure of its kind on campus. Supporters say it is not only environmentally friendly but often cheaper and faster to build than concrete and steel, while being fire resistant and just as strong.”
