Think tank environment will cultivate social and intellectual interaction

SEATTLE, October 11, 2016 — LMN Architects, a multidisciplinary design firm with a reputation for community-focused and impactful civic projects of all scales, announces the design for Clemson University’s College of Business. The new facility, which replaces the existing Sirrine Hall built in 1938, will be dedicated exclusively to business and related programs. The $87.5 million ($66 million construction cost), 160,000-square-foot project will be located at the heart of the main campus—adjacent to the Alumni Center and facing historic Bowman Field. LMN Architects is designing the project in collaboration with local Architect of Record, LS3P.

“Because of the atmosphere the building will create, it will become a beehive of activity that our current business students will be proud of and future students will want to experience,” says Bobby McCormick, Dean of the College of Business. “Its presence across from Bowman Field will redefine the center of campus and identify Clemson as a university providing a world-class business education experience. This will be one of the most important structures constructed on campus in the past 100 years.”

The new facility will enable the College to consolidate activities that are currently distributed across cam-pus in five different locations under one roof. The building, which is conceived as a think-tank environment, houses classrooms, learning labs and study lounges, as well as faculty and departmental offices. In addition, there is a 220-seat, flat floor auditorium, business center, incubator space and café. “The intent is to create a 24/7 space where students are encouraged to linger and interact in un-programmed ways that enrich the school’s mission of promoting social and intellectual interaction to cultivate the overlap of teaching, research and service,” says Rafael Viñoly-Menendez, AIA, a partner at LMN Architects.

LEED Silver certification is targeted. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2019, with construction funded through a combination of state appropriations, private gifts, and institutional bonds.
