Arts + Culture

Centrally located amidst the cultural and civic hub of downtown Bellingham, the historic Mount Baker Theatre is a nationally recognized landmark building. This multi-phased renovation both enhances the historic building to better serve contemporary arts needs and provides new artistic space through the transformation of a former condominium storefront into an engaging new theater space.

Connected directly to the original theater lobby, Phase I of the project creates a new 200-seat multipurpose Studio Theatre that has been acoustically designed to accommodate a variety of performances and events. This expansion fulfills all of the requirements of major touring productions as well as filling a need for a smaller performance space in the local community, extending the life and use of the historic building. New back of house spaces include principal and chorus dressing rooms with shower facilities, a greenroom, wardrobe, production office and ample storage space, along with a new direct access to the main stage. Renovation of the exterior of the building was carried out with careful respect for the original 1920’s design, and included restoration of the original sandstone façade and tile parapet.

Phase II included renovation of the theater and lobby spaces, new ticket office and administrative space, acoustical upgrades, lighting upgrades, and an upgrade of the mechanical and electrical systems.
