Edmonds' Artful Gathering Place

Seattle Times , 1/1/07

Renovation of this historic 1939 moderne style theater and its support spaces has created an important regional center for the performing arts, including dance, ballet, music and other community activities.

The design renewed the 700-seat auditorium by increasing the rake of the orchestra level floor; adding new side walls to provide box seating on both levels; removing an existing low plaster ceiling to increase room volume and sound resonance; and replacing the existing ceiling with acoustic reflector panels. The results include superior acoustics, state-of-the-art lighting and audio-visual systems; and a vastly improved performer/audience relationship that creates much richer overall performance experience.

A new entrance lobby reveals windows that provide dramatic views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Brightly hued, curvilinear ceiling forms drawn from the moderne style extend perceptions of space through the windows to an exterior terrace and lawn, where new seating welcomes visitors and encourages outdoor gathering. Natural daylight illuminates the lobby during the day, and the social experience of event activities become part of the building’s architectural expression at night.
