Park(ing) Day 2013: "Balloon Church"

Seattle, Washington

This year we asked everyone in our office to participate in the creation of a temporary inhabitable structure. Using several PVC pipe arches encased in garden netting, we had everyone in the office blow up and attach balloons as the form-giving element of the structure. The Balloon Church was installed along tourist-frequented 1st Avenue, directly across from the historic Pioneer Square Pergola as a reference to the value and sacredness of public spaces.

Throughout the day people were invited to walk through, write a message on a balloon, and/or Instagram the experience to expand the awareness of the event via social media. The structure picked up a fair amount of internet message board conversation debating the intentions and meaning of Park(ing) Day.
