San Antonio’s historic Municipal Auditorium, built in 1926, is an iconic venue that has served an illustrious tradition of cultural events and civic celebrations. The addition/renovation project will continue its legacy and embellish the creative energy of the facility into the life of the City.
The design retains the primary facades, entrance and public circulation spaces of the historic building, and replaces the previously altered auditorium structure with a multi-purpose performance hall that will serve symphony, ballet, opera, touring productions and a wide variety of community events. The skewed juxtaposition of new and old elements captures space for a studio theater, optimally positioned between the primary lobby and River Walk Plaza to serve multiple uses and simultaneous events.
The exterior the new performance hall is enwrapped with a sweeping metallic veil that unites the disparate volumetric parts into a distinctive visual composition. Exterior lighting is employed to animate the new skin and to softly illuminate the rhythmic, detailed articulation of the historic facade. Through innovative use of materials, adjustable acoustics, lighting and color, the mood of the room is changeable to adapt to artistic spirit and technical needs of various performance events.
