Situated at the northern foot of the Olympic Mountains and looking north to the Straits of Juan de Fuca, the building embraces its local environment and academic mission through integration of site, program, structure and materiality.
The multi-discipline facility includes instruction labs for chemistry, physics, earth sciences, biology, fisheries and computer technology programs. The design employs modular planning to optimize flexibility, allowing the College to adapt science and technology coursework to most effectively support the evolving needs of the local community.
The naturally ventilated circulation spine, which also functions as a conference and community interaction area, links the two lab wings, defines a study and lecture garden, and engages the campus entry to create a new academic quadrangle. The building’s simple forms—clad in a brick and composite wood panel rain screen systems—combined with expressed steel framing, re-interprets the wood siding, brick, and post and beam framing of the original one-story campus buildings.
