Performing Arts Center Complex
City College of San Francisco
As the central component in a major campus expansion, the Center provides a distinctive new campus identity. The design reverses the trad-itional inward focus of campus buildings by openly mixing student and com-munity life, and embraces sustainability- pursuing LEED Gold - as part of its exuberant architectural expression.
The building combines the specific technical requirements of music and drama programs with general education and public functions in a highly interactive, flexible environment. Theaters, recital halls, practice rooms, and a range of general education spaces all open on to a central mixing chamber that serves as a campus circulation spine and performance lobby.
A syncopated pattern of wood boxes animates the practice rooms and teaching spaces within the expansive glass wall defining the building’s public edge, capturing the diversity of activities and creative social dynamics in its community presence. The volume of the main auditorium rises above the roof as a separate mass, enwrapped with a layered metal scrim and colored LED lights that can be programmed to create patterns for different performances and events, embellishing the architecture with the changing qualities of the performance experience.
