McIntyre Hall
Performing Arts & Conference Center
The essence of the program is community integration. Marking the main campus entry to Skagit Valley College, McIntyre Hall serves a diverse collection of college and community performing arts groups, and also functions as a conference center for many types of regional meetings and events.
The building is sited to frame the edge of a major campus green, and presents an urban facade to the adjacent arterial street. An internal curved wall—made of concrete, stained terra cotta color and imprinted with abstractions of dance performance—performs a dual role in the composition of space. It enwraps and defines the multi-purpose lobby/conference space and forms an architectural “filter," animating the experience of entry progression to the auditorium.
The interior of the auditorium exerts its own architectural presence derived from its multi-functionality, responsive acoustics and melding of room/proscenium expression. Flexible technical systems and forestage configurations accommodate a wide range of performance types, and a series of interlocking acoustic wood panels create an inner liner that defines a smaller, more intimate audience chamber within the auditorium “box.” Natural, warm-tone materials and integrated detailing of balcony fronts, guardrails, and lighting all contribute to a cohesive experience.
