Biotechnology & Life Sciences Facility

/ Work / Biotechnology & Life Sciences Building, Washington State University / .

The design is organized around an open lab concept that integrates highly flexible technical systems with both distributed and core support functions, optimizing program flexibility for research in molecular biosciences, integrated biotechnology and reproductive biology.

A “community gallery”, a two-story internal pathway containing research centers, administrative offices and conference rooms, forms the beginning of an academic and architectural linkage that will connect to future buildings within a larger research complex. A unifying roof expression and transparent curtainwall distinguish this interactive “spine” as a primary ordering element in the precinct master plan.

Program spaces include state-of-the-art laboratories; lab support spaces; core lab facilities such as vivarium and loading dock; and faculty and administrative offices. The building’s exterior expression responds to the functional needs of its modern research activities, specific solar and climatic conditions of the site, and the straightforward architectural character of the predominantly red brick campus buildings.
